MAGIC OF THE STARS

Review by Alan Enright

It is said that variety is the spice of life and on a damp, windy evening in February this great old-fashioned (in the best sense) variety show certainly spiced up my life – and from the laughter that was coming from the packed auditorium it was doing the same for an awful lot of other people.

This is Colin Matthew’s 31st year of producing and directing shows at the Babbacombe Theatre and as usual this production has a record-breaking run that starts early in February and goes to the middle of October.

Steve Laister is the new headline act this year, totally owning the stage with his original comedy material, brilliant sketches and very accomplished singing. He is ably supported by actress and singer Lindsey Collard, who has toured with her own Karen Carpenter Tribute show, Gail-Marie, who has had a very successful career in West End musicals and Wayne ’Champagne’ Martin, a versatile performer, a regular in Babbacombe Theatre productions and always a favourite with audiences here.  The biggest ‘gasp’ of the night went to award-winning illusionist, Daniel Dean, who had us all talking about how he could possibly have pulled off, not one, but two breath-taking illusions.

He was definitely the ‘magic’ in ‘Magic of the Stars’.  As well as performing individually, all the cast members, including Daniel, come together for various musical numbers and sketches with my favourites being Steve and Lindsey’s rendition of the

Peter Sellers and Sophie Loren number ‘Goodness Gracious Me’ and Steve’s ‘matador’ sketch.

Always a highlight of every show is the superb dancing from the Danze Magique Team and their amazing costumes and the very talented children – the Rock Starz – who are a credit to the local dance studios. Once again, a magical show and a credit to everyone involved.
